Aim: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of using the concept cartoon technique in teaching the “Human and Environment” unit in the 7th-grade science course on students’ academic achievement.
Method: The research was conducted as an experimental study. The population of the study consisted of middle school students studying in Şırnak, while the sample included 98 seventh-grade students enrolled in a middle school located in the city center of Şırnak. The experimental and control groups were determined through random sampling. During the experimental process, the concept cartoon technique was used in the experimental group, whereas the control group followed the existing curriculum. As the data collection tool, the Human and Environment Achievement Test developed by the researcher was used, which consisted of 25 questions and had a reliability coefficient of 0.818. The achievement test was administered to both the experimental and control groups in three stages—as a pre-test, post-test, and retention test. The collected data were analysed using the independent samples t-test.
Findings: According to the findings, no significant difference was observed between the post-test and retention test scores of the experimental group using the concept cartoon technique and those of the control group. It was concluded that the use of the concept cartoon technique in science education was not as effective as expected in improving students’ academic achievement and ensuring the retention of learned concepts.
Results: The research concluded that the use of concept cartoon techniques in science lessons was not as effective as expected in improving students' academic achievement and ensuring the retention of what they learned.
